Biography

Alex Wang cofounded Scale AI in 2016 to help companies put their raw data to work for AI and machine learning.

He served as CEO of Scale AI until June 2025, when Meta acquired 49% of the company in a deal that valued Scale at around $29 billion and Wang left Scale to become Meta's chief AI officer.

Wang was the world's youngest self-made billionaire until October 2025, when he was overtaken by Polymarket founder Shayne Coplan.

A New Mexico native, Wang landed full time engineering jobs in Silicon Valley at age 17 with fintech Addepar and then question-and-answer site Quora.

At age 19, after a brief stint at MIT to study machine learning, Wang dropped out to attend the Y Combinator accelerator and launch Scale.

About

Wang, the son of weapons physicists, grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico, the sleepy town where the U.S. developed its first atomic bomb during World War II.

He entered his first math contest in 6th grade intent on winning a trip to Disney. He did - and later competed in physics Olympiads and science bowls.
