Athanasios Martinos & family

Athanasios Martinos is the owner of Greek shipping firm Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, which has a fleet of 75 tankers, bulk carriers and container vessels.

He founded the company in 1990, after splitting from the family shipping company Thenamaris, which he had cofounded with his mother and two brothers in 1972.

Collectively, Athanasios and his brothers Andreas and Constantinos own the largest shipping fleet in Greece, the largest shipowning nation in the world.

He also owns a Cyprus-based real estate investment firm which holds office and retail properties in London and Geneva.

He served as the civil administrator of the monastic community of Mount Athos, an autonomous region run by Orthodox monks in Greece, from 2019 to 2023.
