Barbara Boehringer is an heir to the Boehringer Ingelheim fortune, best known as the world's largest privately-owned pharmaceutical company.

The German company was founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer with just 28 employees who produced ingredients for pharmacies.

By the time of the founder's death, Boehringer Ingelheim employed 1,500 people. Today it boasts a workforce of 53,000 and has a presence in 130 markets.

Some of the company's most famous drugs now treat COPD, anti-coagulation and type 2 diabetes.
