Biography

Bruce Karsh runs Los Angeles-based private equity firm Oaktree Capital Management with longtime partner Howard Marks; they founded it in 1995.

In 2019, Brookfield Asset Management acquired 61% of Oaktree for $4.9 billion in cash and stock. It agreed to buy the rest for $3 billion in 2025.

Karsh still runs the company, which had gone public in 2012 and which continues to operate independently, as co-chairman and CIO.

A leading debt investor, Oaktree manages over $220 billion in assets, two thirds of which is invested in corporate or distressed debt.

About

Karsh, a rock-and-roll memorabilia collector, owns the rights to the Beatles' movie "A Hard Day's Night," and co-owns the rights to "Help!"

Karsh is a minority owner of the Golden State Warriors. He made a play for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, but was outbid by Microsoft billionaire Steve Ballmer.
