Biography

David Hall is at the forefront of the self-driving car revolution with his company Velodyne Lidar, which make sensors for vehicles.

He first patented a LiDAR sensor in 2006 as part of a race for autonomous vehicles sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Hall, an engineer, founded Velodyne in 1983 as an audio equipment company, selling speakers with a patented sub-woofer starting at $2,000.

Hall, who owns the majority of private company Velodyne Lidar, stepped down as CEO in January 2020 but remains chairman.

About

Hall made a robot for a TV show called "Robot Wars" that finished second-place in the 2001 world championship.

Hall's father was also an engineer and his grandfather was a physicist.
