Biography

David Tran is the founder and owner of Huy Fong Foods, the Irwindale, California-based company that makes Sriracha hot sauce.

Tran arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Vietnam in 1979 and started selling hot sauce from a blue Chevy van in Los Angeles in February 1980.

He first started making chili sauce as a cook in the South Vietnamese Army in the 1970s and later made his own sauce after the end of the Vietnam War.

Sriracha is now the third-largest hot sauce brand in the U.S., behind Tabasco and Frank's RedHot, according to market research firm IBISWorld.

Tran's two children, William and Yassie, both work at the company and are in line to inherit the business.

About

The ingredients of Sriracha have stayed the same since the beginning--chili, sugar, salt, garlic and vinegar?and the company has never advertised its products.

Sriracha's bottles with a rooster logo and green cap have been seen everywhere from the TV show Survivor to the International Space Station.
