Biography

George Bishop founded oil and gas producer GeoSouthern Energy in 1981.

In one of the biggest scores of the oil boom, GeoSouthern sold its south Texas fields to Devon Energy in 2013 for $6 billion.

In 2015, Bishop redeployed some capital into a shale natural gas play in Louisiana, in a JV with Blackstone Credit called GEP Haynesville.

He sold his stake in GEP Haynesville in 2021, when Southwestern Energy acquired the company for $1.85 billion.

In 2021 he also launched GEP Haynesville II, a joint venture with Williams Companies, also focused on the Haynesville shale in Louisiana.

Bishop reportedly owns Chub Cay, a 29-room resort in the Bahamas with a yacht marina that can accommodate up to 160 yachts.

About

Bishop endowed the George H. Bishop Scholarship in Geology at Mississippi State University, where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in petroleum geology.

Bishop's GeoSouthern Energy was one of the first companies to invest in the Eagle Ford shale in south Texas, one of the largest natural gas plays in the U.S.
