Biography
Ignacio "Nacho" Torras runs Tricon Energy, one of the world's biggest traders of chemicals and plastics.
Torras' family was wealthy in Spain, having owned paper mills and newspapers, but they lost it in the 1970s recession.
As a teen he moved with his family to Brazil. He learned from his father who traded papermaking chemicals such as caustic soda (aka sodium hydroxide) used to soften and bleach wood fibers.
After a seven-year stint at Houston-based Holland Chemical, he and three other traders launched Tricon in 1996.
Torras tried bringing in a CEO to run the day-to-day in 2016 so he could focus on trading. But the new guy told him he was too much of a control freak. So Torras took the job back: "After a year I realized I wasn't such a bad CEO."
