Biography
Father and son Kapil and Rahul Bhatia's (pictured) biggest asset is InterGlobe Aviation, whose IndiGo is India's biggest airline by market share.
IndiGo, which was cofounded with billionaire airline veteran Rakesh Gangwal in 2006, has a 55% domestic market share (as of January 2023).
It has a fleet of 300 aircraft and flies to 101 destinations, including 26 overseas.Its CEO is airline veteran Pieter Elbers, the former CEO of KLM.
In 2019, the Bhatias and Gangwal had a public falling out over how IndiGo is run. In 2022, Gangwal stepped down from the board and said he would be gradually selling his stake.
In 2022, InterGlobe partnered with logistics giant UPS in a joint venture to start Movin, a new logistics brand in India.
About
An electrical engineer, Rahul Bhatia's first business venture was in telecom but that never took off due to regulatory hurdles.
Their hospitality arm has 19 hotels in India with France's Accor and 14 hotels outside India, including the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel.
