Biography

Mikhail Fedyaev is a former mechanic in a car factory who now has controlling interests in closely held Russian fertilizer and coal businesses.

In the 1990s Fedyaev met former partner Vladimir Gridin and, with support from Aman Tuleev, the governor of Kemerovo Oblast, became co-owners of a coal field in the region.

Over the next course of about two decades, they built the venture into Sibirskiy Delovoy Soyuz (Siberian Business Union), with operations in coal mining, engineering, chemicals, transportation and construction.

In 2021, a fire in a ventilation shaft of SDS coal mine, Listvyazhnaya, caused the death of 46 miners and five rescuers. In 2025, Fedyaev was sentenced to 3.5 years of probation for technical violations at the mine.

Fedyaev's son Pavel became deputy of the State Duma, low chamber of the Russian parliament, in 2011.
