Biography

Stephen Bechtel, Jr. ran Bechtel, his family's construction and engineering firm, for 30 years, from 1960 to 1990.

Today his grandson, Brendan Bechtel, is CEO and chairman of the $25.5 billion (2018 revenues) company.

Stephen is believed to own an estimated 20% of Bechtel. His son Riley, who retired as chairman in April 2017, is estimated to own another 20%.

Bechtel's signature projects include building the Channel Tunnel and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) around San Francisco.

Bechtel was founded in 1898 by Stephen's grandfather, Warren Bechtel.

About

Stephen joined Bechtel in 1948 and worked on a pipeline project in Texas.

In 2009 he donated $50 million to the Boy Scouts of America to help create a 10,600-acre reserve in West Virginia.
