Biography

Tim Sweeney is cofounder and CEO of Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, one of the world's most popular video games.

Epic raised $2 billion in 2022 from Sony and the family office of the clan behind Lego in a funding round that valued the company at $31.5 billion.

In 2024, Epic raised $1.5 billion from Disney in a funding round that valued the company at $22.5 billion.

Epic had been battling Apple in court over app store fees since 2020, when Sweeney conceded defeat in 2024 in what he called "a sad outcome for all developers."

Epic Games paid $520 million to settle FTC allegations of privacy violations and unwanted charges in 2022.

The company is the creator of the Unreal Engine, one of the most used game development tool kits for other studios.

Sweeney is an active land conservationist in North Carolina, where he has purchased about 60,000 acres of forest land to keep it from being developed.

In 2021, Sweeney pledged 7,500 acres in North Carolina's Roan Highlands to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.
